Located in the Surat Thani region of Thailand, Khao Sok was declared the country’s 22nd national park in 1980. Nestled 120 km away from Surat Thani city, it sits along the route between Phuket and Khao Lok. Now, let’s embark on a virtual journey through the wonders of Khao Sok National Park.

Khao Sok: A Glimpse into the Enchanting World of the Oldest Rainforests

Khao Sok is home to one of the world’s oldest rainforests. Embarking on a journey from the city of Surat Thani, after just a half-hour drive, you find yourself stepping into the magical realm of greenery. The scenery outside becomes so mesmerizing during this journey that it’s nearly impossible to take your eyes off the window.

Everywhere you look, lush greenery and mountains surrounded by limestone formations paint the landscape. While Khao Sok bears similarities to the beauty of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, El Nido in the Philippines, or Krabi in Thailand, it possesses its own unique charm.

Before delving into the details of our exploration, we believe it’s essential to provide a brief insight into what this place is like.

WHAT IS A RAINFOREST?

A forest that receives a minimum of 2000 mm of annual rainfall is referred to as a rainforest. Abundant rainfall contributes to the dense vegetation cover found in these forests. Throughout the year, some trees in the forest shed their leaves, while others remain evergreen. This characteristic enables rainforests to maintain their continuous greenery. In fact, they are recognized as some of the world’s largest rainforests. Due to the dense forest cover, only a mere 1% of sunlight reaches the forest floor, resulting in rainforests being quite dark. Additionally, the temperature variation in tropical rainforests fluctuates by only 2-3 degrees along the forest floor.

Spanning over 739 km2, Khao Sok holds a superior distinction as it is not only older than the Amazon rainforest but also boasts greater biodiversity. Out of the 739 km2, 165 km2 is comprised of the man-made Cheow Lan Lake. The lake was constructed in 1982 by the Thai government as a hydroelectric power source, leading to the evacuation of five villages within the designated lake area. Today, these villages are submerged beneath the lake.

The annual precipitation in the National Park is 3500 mm.

Additionally, the National Park harbors approximately 5% of the total global animal species.

The composition of the National Park is as follows:

• 40% hill forest
• 27% plain
• 15% limestone rock vegetation
• 15% low shrubland
• 3% 600-1000 m rainforest

Flora and Fauna

Due to being a rainforest, special species of animals and plants are found. the National Park is home to unique species of animals and plants. Some of these include the Buttress Roots tree, the world’s largest flower known as Rafflesia, the carnivorous Pitcher Plant, the Liana tree, and the Dipterocarp tree (Dipterocarp refers to fruits with two wings, and the fruits of this tree can visit other trees).

Among mammals, there are clouded leopards, tigers, leopards, and Malayan bears.

In terms of bird species, there are a total of 311 different types of birds. Some of these include the Buffy Fish owl, barred cuckoo, yellow-bellied bulbul, Chinese pond heron, drongo bird, and tailorbird.

Insect Species: centipedes, scorpions, tarantulas, cicadas, mantises, atlas moths, and more.

Reptiles and Amphibians: Thailand boasts 170 species of snakes, with 48 of them being venomous. Many of these snake species, including cobras, are found in Khao Sok.

It is estimated that the National Park is around 160 million years old, and its formation can be attributed to tectonic movements, climate changes, and erosions.

Millions of years ago, when this area extended from China to Borneo, it took its present form as a result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, giving rise to the Himalayas. The limestone formations seen in and around the National Park were also pushed upward as a result of this collision. Rivers formed by melting glaciers and numerous waterfalls now bring life to this region.

If you, like us, love nature, as you approach Khao Sok National Park, your first words will likely be, “This is the place I’ve been looking for.”

One of the aspects we love about Thailand is their commitment to nature. Along the Khao Sok road, excluding occasional road expansions, it consists of only two lanes for round-trip travel. It’s impossible to spot tall buildings along the way. Hotels, one or two stories high, are discreetly built completely immersed in nature.

We couldn’t understand why Khao Sok isn’t as touristy as other islands and cities in Thailand. Well, having fewer tourists is actually a good thing. More tourists would mean more hotels, more restaurants, and more travel agencies to meet the demand. In our opinion, Khao Sok has preserved its pristine beauty because it is not widely known or recognized.

When we look at the demographic of visitors, it’s a region preferred by tourists of all ages, especially Europeans, from 7 to 70.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK

Make sure to visit a rainforest at least once in your lifetime. Therefore, one of the most delightful activities to experience in the forest is taking a canoe tour on the Sok River, participating in morning or night treks in the jungle, visiting the elephant orphanage for a mud bath with the elephants, and taking a boat tour on Cheow Lan Lake.

Believe us, each of the activities we’ve listed will be among the most beautiful moments you’ll ever experience. The region is truly a paradise for nature lovers. We believe that no one who comes here will leave disappointed. Even if you do nothing else, taking a walk within the park will be enough to make your day beautiful.

KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK

Don’t forget to take a walk in the rainforest within the national park. If you’re not taking a guide with you, you can explore a total of 7 km of trails (round-trip) without a guide.

If you opt for guided trekking on specific routes, the national park management at the park entrance can assist you with a guide. Keep your eyes wide open during trekking because the likelihood of seeing the world’s largest flower, Rafflesia, is very high. However, catching it in bloom is purely a matter of luck . Another option to purchase the tour is from the hotel where you are staying.

You can cool off at the Ton Kloi, Than Sawan, and Sip Et Chan waterfalls along the popular hiking routes in the park.

Those planning to hike in the National Park should definitely bring drinking water with them. Also, avoid carrying a heavy backpack as it can be challenging during trekking.

CHEOW LAN LAKE BOAT TOUR

Make sure to take a boat tour on Cheow Lan Lake. If you have the time, consider staying overnight in the lake’s floating bungalows, immersing yourself in the heart of nature. Experience a day away from the ordinary, and witness an indescribable sunrise.

There are three ways to get to Cheow Lan Lake:

Purchase a package tour from tour companies: This option includes all transportation, national park entrance fees, and a boat tour. The cost per person starts from 1500 Baht.

Opt for an overnight tour: Tour companies can arrange this for you, with prices starting from 2500 Baht. The tour fee does not include the 300 Baht national park entrance fee. Included in the package are all transfers, accommodation, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 1 dinner, morning and night boat safaris, a 3-hour trekking tour, and a cave visit.

Go independently: We also chose this route. Renting a motorbike from the town of Khlong Sok where we stayed, we traveled 60 km. After reaching the National Park, we paid the entrance fee of 300 Baht per person and negotiated for a boat. We paid 1700 Baht for a 3-hour private tour, as there was no one else with us. However, if you don’t want to pay this fee, you can share the boat with others. Since the boats accommodate 6 people, if you join a full boat, the cost per person will be much more affordable.

While it may seem convenient to purchase from a tour company and have everything arranged for you without the hassle, we particularly didn’t choose this path. This is because exploring Thailand on a motorcycle and stopping wherever we please to discover different places is our favorite thing to do. If you feel that there’s no need for an adventure, you can buy the Cheow Lan Lake tour from the agencies in Khlong Sok.

KHAO SOK ELEPHANT SANCTUARY – BATHING WİTH ELEPHANTS

Khao Sok Elephant Sanctuary is an official park where elephants in the wild, especially those in danger or without mothers, are protected. Perhaps we spent some of the most enjoyable hours of our lives here. As participants, there were a total of 6-7 people in our group. Although there were two kids in the group who were more curious than us, we must admit that we had more fun than them

We contacted them via the phone number we obtained from the elephant sanctuary’s website, expressing our desire to participate. They picked us up from the address we provided and dropped us back at the end of the tour. If you’re planning to go, you can do it just like we did. If you don’t have a phone to call, you can also communicate via email. They are very responsive and always provide a prompt response.

While bathing with the elephants, I had placed my GoPro on the ground and, naturally, forgot about it. I realized this later and immediately sent a message, informing them of where I left my phone. Within half an hour, they brought the device back to the hotel. They have very attentive and friendly staff. Initially, our plan was to visit an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. However, due to its touristy and crowded nature, we decided to use this opportunity in favor of Khao Sok. And we are so glad we did!

We spent two full days in Khao Sok. It was a place where we said, “I wish we had more time and stayed for four days.” But we made a promise to ourselves. On our next trip to Thailand, we’ll find our way back here.

If all the recommendations we’ve given so far and the experiences shared based on our advice have left people satisfied, believe us, we can give the same recommendation for Khao Sok.

HOW TO GET KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK?

Located 730 km south of Bangkok,

58 km northeast of Khao Lak,

153 km north of Phuket,

and 128 km west of Surat Thani,

you can easily reach Khao Sok National Park from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak. If you’re coming from other places (such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Trat), the most practical way is to go to Surat Thani.

After reaching Surat Thani, you can get to the entrance of Khao Sok National Park in approximately two and a half hours by public buses heading to Phuket or minivans heading to Khao Sok.

Transportation cost from Surat Thani to Khao Sok: 120 THB (as of January 2019). The updated transportation cost in 2023 varies between 7-10 USD.

You can securely purchase your bus tickets online from the 12go.Asia website. It is the transportation platform we trust the most and frequently use during our travels in the Far East.

Transportation from Phuket and Phi Phi to Khao Sok:

If you’re coming directly from Phi Phi Island, you should first take a ferry to Phuket.
From Phuket to Khao Sok National Park, you have options such as buses, minibusses, and taxis. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Transportation from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao to Khao Sok:

No matter which island you come from, the ferry will take you to the Don Sak pier, located 64 km from Surat Thani. Upon arriving at the pier, you can go to the bus terminal in Surat Thani city center, purchase a bus ticket, and reach Khao Sok National Park in about 2 hours.

If you don’t want to waste time, you can arrange your transfer in advance. As soon as you arrive at Don Sak pier, you can quickly reach Khao Sok with a waiting vehicle or minivan. The journey from Don Sak pier to Khao Sok takes 3 hours. If you plan to arrange your transfer in advance, you can search and purchase your ticket from the 12Go.Asia website by looking for “Don Sak Pier – Khao Sok.”

Transportation from Krabi to Khao Sok:

You can comfortably reach Khao Sok with minivans providing direct transfers from Krabi. Paying approximately $11 per person, you’ll have a journey of 3 hours and 40 minutes.

We traveled to Khao Sok from Kanchanaburi. Originally, our plan was to take buses from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok, then take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, and finally take buses to reach Khao Sok, which is 120 km away.

When we found a train from Kanchanaburi to Surat Thani, we decided to go directly by train without extending the journey. After getting off at Surat Thani train station, we took the Phuket bus that departs right across the road and got off at the entrance of Khao Sok National Park. Our travel time was 8 hours from Kanchanaburi to Surat Thani by train and approximately 2-2.5 hours from Surat Thani to Khao Sok.

Regardless of where you’re coming from, buses will drop you off at the Khao Sok intersection. As you enter the main street from this intersection, you’ll find restaurants and hotels on both sides. If your hotel is a bit far from the intersection, you can hire transportation one by one from here.

If your accommodation provides transfer services and you inform them of your arrival time at the Khao Sok intersection in advance, they will come and pick you up from there.

WHERE TO STAY IN KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK?

Accommodation options offer a variety for every kind of traveler looking to enjoy the natural beauty. You can choose between two main accommodation areas: the overwater bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake and the town of Khlong Sok. Here are some recommendations for staying in these areas:

Accommodation in Khlong Sok Town:

Khlong Sok town is located near the entrance of Khao Sok National Park and provides numerous accommodation options. We chose to stay at Khlong Sok Morning Mist Resort. Even though we didn’t make a reservation, it was an excellent choice for us with its clean rooms, pool, and restaurant. Additionally, being within walking distance to the Khao Sok River and the national park offered an immersive experience with nature.

If you’re looking for a more authentic accommodation experience, we can recommend Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort. This hotel offers meals prepared with fresh farm ingredients in its restaurant. Additionally, being located by the river, you can enjoy magnificent views from all rooms.

Accommodation in Overwater Bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake:

Staying in overwater bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake provides a magnificent experience in the middle of the lake for those seeking a tranquil stay amidst nature. If you are considering staying in a treehouse, Our Jungle House is a fantastic option. In addition to their regular rooms, they also have treehouses. The treehouses have elegant decor and are exceptionally clean.

WHEN TO GO KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK?

Khao Sok’s climate undergoes changes throughout the year. Here is more information about the seasons and weather in Khao Sok:

Rainy Season (May – November):

The rainiest period falls between May and November. During these months, the region experiences abundant rainfall, and the showers can be frequent and intense. This period marks a time when the natural environment comes to life, and the vegetation turns vibrant green. Forests thrive, and water sources like Chiew Larn Lake overflow. However, due to the heavy rainfall, trekking and outdoor activities may sometimes become challenging.

Dry Season (December – April):

The dry season starts in December and continues until April. During this period, rainfall decreases, and the region becomes drier. However, it may not be entirely devoid of rain, with occasional light showers, so it’s essential to be cautious. The dry season is more suitable for outdoor activities, making it an ideal time for trekking or water activities on the lake.

Temperature:

The hottest months are May and April, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius or higher. The average temperature throughout the year is approximately 30 degrees Celsius. While the climate is relatively stable, it’s worth considering that temperatures tend to be higher in May and April.

When planning a visit to this area, taking into account the seasons and weather conditions can help you adjust your activities and clothing preferences. The rainy season enhances the vibrancy of natural beauty, but the dry season may be more favorable for outdoor activities.

Ubud Monkey Forest

A short motorbike ride from Ubud’s downtown, you’ll find the Monkey Forest, named for its resident primates. Beyond monkey sightings, you can enjoy a leisurely forest stroll for a few hours. This sanctuary isn’t just a tourist hotspot; it’s a crucial hub for research initiatives, contributing to global studies on monkey social interaction and behavior.

• Before entering the forest, check the rules to be followed on the signboard.
• If you have plastic bags, bottles and similar items with you, do not forget to give them to the ticket office.
• Monkeys are generally uninterested in approaching you unless you have bananas or other snacks to share. If you’d like to interact with them, there are trained attendants who can assist. They offer a service for a small fee, taking your phone and capturing a selfie of you while providing peanuts to the monkeys.
• In the interest of the monkeys’ health, please refrain from giving them biscuits, bread, peanuts, or any unhealthy junk food.

Ubud Palace / Puri Saren

The Ubud Palace, a significant site in Ubud, was erected in the 1800s, featuring the distinct Balinese architectural style. It once served as the royal residence for the King of Ubud. You might wonder why a palace exists in Ubud. The answer lies in Ubud’s history, as it held royal city status for approximately a century, thus justifying the construction of this splendid palace.

During the evening, you can witness an enchanting Balinese dance performance that occurs each day. Tickets for the show are conveniently available for purchase from the venue’s staff at the entrance.

Pura Taman Saraswati

Found at the town center, just 200 meters away from Ubud Palace, this temple is a water palace, often referred to as the Lotus Lake Temple. Its remarkable feature includes the temple’s serene pools and the profusion of lotus flowers adorning them, setting it apart from other Balinese temples. The temple was built in the name of Saraswati, known as the creator god.

The temple, where you will see the Balinese architecture very clearly, will be a very good choice for taking photos and visiting its surroundings. There is no entrance fee.

We’ve encountered blogs that describe Ubud Palace by incorporating this image. It is not Ubud Palace.

There’s a charming local cafe situated by the lake, with a Starbucks on the opposite side. Surprisingly, not many are aware of the lovely garden tucked behind Starbucks. We highly recommend enjoying your coffee in this tranquil setting. Similar to the Ubud Palace, this temple hosts dance performances on specific days of the week. During our visit in May 2023, we had the pleasure of attending a captivating dance show at the Pura Taman Saraswati temple.

Chairs are placed left and right. If you go early you have the chance to sit in the front row. Initially, we occupied chairs, but later we opted to sit on the floor in a belly-down position at the center. This spot provides a prime vantage point for enjoying the dance performance. So, if you don’t mind sitting on the floor, we recommend securing a spot here.

Goa Gajah / Elephant Cave

The cave, whose name is a bit surprising, is a remarkable archaeological site that houses sculptures and stone carvings. With its origins tracing back to the 11th century, Goa Gajah holds a sacred significance as a place dedicated to meditation and spirituality.

The name is surprising. The cave is intriguingly named “Goa Gajah,” despite the absence of elephants in the vicinity. While the exact reason for this name remains uncertain, there are various speculations and theories surrounding it.

Situated on the western outskirts of Bedulu village within the Gianyar district, this temple is just 6 km away from the heart of Ubud. After visiting the temple, you should definitely see the waterfall inside.

Sangeh Monkey Forest

During all our past trips to Ubud, a visit to the Monkey Forest in the heart of the town was a must. However, on our latest visit, we made a conscious choice to explore various other areas of Ubud. One of them was the Sangeh monkey forest, which we had always passed by but never had the chance to visit. Compared to Ubud Monkey Forest, the monkeys living here are more wild.

Upon your arrival at the entrance, you will certainly be greeted by the presence of guards. Do not prevent them from accompanying you. Otherwise you will not be able to visit on your own. Thanks to the guards, we visited the monkey forest easily and with their guidance. At the end of the tour, don’t forget to tip the guard as much as you wish. Although this place has a smaller trail than Ubud Monkey Forest, it is not as touristic as Ubud Monkey Forest. As such, it is very enjoyable to visit.

Tegenungan Waterfall

It is a waterfall very close to Ubud. You have to descend steep steps to reach the waterfall. We added it to the list because it is around Ubud. It is not a must-see waterfall.

It is 10 km south of Ubud center. It is in Tegenunyan village. Entrance fee 20.000 IDR

Kanto Lampo Waterfall

This is one of our favorite waterfalls in Ubud. Accessing it involves descending a significant number of stairs. At the end of the stairs there is a pond area where the waterfall flows. When the water level is elevated, it can rise above your waist. You can leave your belongings in a corner of the stairs and go to the main waterfall flowing into the pond. Like in many places across Bali, you’ll also find a bustling crowd of tourists here. Unfortunately, you will have to wait in line to take the photos you see. The waterfall is not suitable for swimming!

Tibumana Waterfall

Another waterfall near the heart of Ubud is Tibumana Waterfall. While it may be smaller in size, the pool at the base of the waterfall provides an ideal spot for taking a refreshing dip.It is not crowded like other waterfalls.

Taman Beji Griya Waterfall

While often labeled as a waterfall, Taman Beji Griyi is, in fact, a spiritual healing center. If you’re interested in taking part in the ancient Balinese purification ceremony known as Melukat, an entrance fee is required. Melukat is a sacred ritual aimed at cleansing the mind, body, and soul. Led by a priest, it involves reciting prayers, making offerings, and concluding with a purifying bath in the revered waters, believed to rid the body of impurities.

Whether or not you opt for the purification ceremony, as you arrive, you’ll be adorned with a purple shawl and sash, and you’ll be asked to leave your bags and personal belongings outside. If you have the time, we highly recommend participating in the ritual for a truly unique and enriching experience.

THINGS TO DO IN THE NORTH OF UBUD

Terunyan Village

It is one of the oldest villages on the island of Bali. The village situated to the western shores of Lake Batur, the largest lake on the island of Bali, is renowned for its unique burial traditions. All the bones and skulls are on the ground. The big tree in the cemetery, which you can reach in 20 minutes by boat from the village, is called Taru Menyan. Taru means tree and Menyan means fragrant. According to the locals, this tree effectively prevents the odor of decomposing bodies from dispersing. We went to witness it firsthand and can confirm that it’s indeed accurate.

Penglipuran Village

It is the best preserved traditional village in Bali. Penglipuran has earned recognition as one of the top three cleanest villages worldwide. If you get the opportunity to visit, you’ll undoubtedly observe this distinction. It’s worth acknowledging that this is quite a popular tourist destination. If you plan to go to Tukad Cepung or Krisik waterfall, we think you should see it even if it is just a quick trip as you will be very close to Penglipuran.

Goa Raja Waterfall – Tukad Cepung Waterfall

The distance between both waterfalls is 4.5 km. If you are going to choose between the two, we recommend Tukad Cepung. Especially since this waterfall flows between the rocks, the ambiance when the sun hits the waterfall from the hill is completely different. But we would like to emphasize that it is very crowded.

Krisik Waterfall

When we saw dozens of motorcycles and parked vehicles in the parking lot of Tukad Cepung waterfall, we realized how crowded it was inside, so we decided to give up and go to Kritik waterfall. Since we had never been there before, we asked the shopkeepers in the parking lot if they would recommend us to go to Kritik waterfall to avoid any surprises. Although they all advised us not to go, we decided to go. I am glad we didn’t listen to the locals and went.

There are two waterfalls in Krisik. One of them is a thin flowing waterfall and the main one is reached by a wooden bridge. After descending the stairs, when you see the signboard, it takes you to the thin flowing waterfall on the left. If you continue to the right, you reach the main waterfall with a wooden bridge. You can continue directly to the right to save time.

Mount Batur

Sometimes you come across insatiable landscapes, and this is one such place. Mt. Batur is a small stratovolcano (conical shaped volcano) 1,717 meters high in the north of the island of Bali. More than 20 eruptions have occurred over the last two centuries. You can join sunrise trekking tours to Batur, the most active volcano on the island of Bali, or you can watch this unique view from the opposite shore of the lake.

Tegallalang Rice Terrace

Tegallang is the most spectacular of Ubud’s must-see rice fields. The magic of the rays reflecting on the fields at sunrise and sunset will impress you. As soon as you see this place, the rice fields of Yunnan in China and Sa Pa in Vietnam come to mind. Okay, we admit that it is not as magnificent as them, but at least it is close. Even if you are not going to enter the rice field, take a break for 5-10 minutes on the road and watch and photograph the view from the hill!

The best place to spend time in the rice fields is Alas Harum. Within Alas Harum, you can spend time in the infinity pool with a view of the rice terrace and a DJ performance in the place called Cretya. Those who wish can swing on a swing over the rice fields. Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

atiluwih is one of the less preferred places to visit. We don’t know if this is because it is less known or because it is far from the center. But we would like to say that it is as big or even bigger and more beautiful than Tegallalang. After all, it is not on the Unesco World Heritage List for nothing.

Tirta Empul Temple

The water temple of Tirta Empul is a sacred water spa for Balinese Hindus. This is Indonesia’s largest and most populous water temple dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu. The water source inside the temple was discovered in 962 AD. Its source comes from the Pakerisan river. The temple consists of three sections: back, front and center.

As soon as you enter the temple, you will pass through the large stone Bali gate (locally known as candi bentar) and arrive at the outer courtyard of the temple. This area of the temple is called jaba sisi. At the end of the courtyard, there is another candi bentar built into the wall leading to the central courtyard.

This gate is guarded by neatly carved huge statues of two Dwarapalas or guards who have been given a golden colored brush. At the top of the gate is a carving of a Kala, which is quite different from other Kala carvings as it has teeth sticking upwards and a pair of hands with open arms.

As you enter the inner courtyard you will arrive at the jaba tengah area, the main area of the temple. Here the sacred springs turn into a large, crystal clear pool inside the temple. This purification ritual is known as melukat. There are a total of two pools and 30 running water taps in the central location. Hindu people come here to go under the holy water and perform ceremonies. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that Hindus will enter. If you want to enter as a tourist, no one prevents you. Balinese people have been coming here for more than 1000 years and purifying under the holy water.

The pools behind the purification are the last part of Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple called jeroan (filled with green algae).

By the way, it goes without saying that you cannot enter the temples without sarongs. But as an additional information and a practice we have never encountered before was hair collection. You can’t enter the back section of Tirta Empul without a hair bun. The guards warn you to collect your hair at the entrance. On our 2023 visit, tires were placed in the area where hair is collected. Even if you don’t have a hairpin, you can collect it with the tires here.

-The Myth of Creation-

The creation myth, based on a manuscript called Usana Bali, tells of an epic battle between a powerful but evil king named Mayadenawa and a God, Bhatara Indra. The king did not believe in God and forbade his subjects to worship God. The king had spiritual powers and misused them to cast a spell. So a priest prayed to God that the King would stop the war. Then God and his warriors came against the king, fought and deposed him.

At night, when God and his army were asleep, the king sneaked in and made them a poisoned drink. When God woke up in the morning and saw that his army was dead, he struck the ground with his staff and pierced the earth, and a holy spring of water was born. The dead army was sprayed with this water and brought back to life. This water source, believed to have healing properties and to be the source of life, became known as Tirta Empul.

The Balinese Hindu people commemorate Mayadenawa’s death every 210 days in the Balinese traditional calendar as the day when Virtue triumphs over Evil in a ritual and ceremony called Galungan.

Galungan Day: Once every 210 days you will definitely notice that you are surrounded by bamboo poles known as “penjor” all over the Island of Bali. Galungan marks the beginning of the most important religious ceremonies in Bali. The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their old homes. During this festival all Balinese return to their villages to spend time with their families and help with household chores by offering offerings and food.

Another thing that is typical for this time of year is that you will see barongs roaming around the village. In every local village, Balinese walk around with the barongs at dusk to scare away evil spirits and protect the village against anything bad.

The temple is in the village of Tampak Siring in Manukaya district. It is a 30-minute drive from Ubud.

Pura Gunung Kawi

This is another water temple that looks very old in appearance, but this is due to its neglect. It is not possible to understand why Gunung Kawi is left like this while other popular temples are given so much attention, care and maintenance.

Ulun Danu Beratan

Ulan Danu is a water temple, also known as Pura Ulan Danu Beratan. Located at the tip of Lake Bratan Bedugul, Ulan Danu is the most famous Hindu temple on the island of Bali. The temple, also called the water temple, is almost floating on the lake. Information about its history shows that it was written on papyrus according to archaeological findings and historical records.

The sarcophagus and stone panel in the left front courtyard of the temple are findings from the megalithic period (500 BC). Ulun Danu Beratan, which has become a symbol of the island of Bali, is one of the first places to visit.

Handara Gate

Handara gate is a traditional Hindu gate. The entrance to the golf center is one of the most photographed and shared places in Bali. Since we have been going back and forth for years, we have also observed how the demand has increased over the years. Before, when we used to leave Ubud center for our daily route, we would stop in front of Handara Gate, take a few photos and continue on our way.

Over the years, people’s demand for this place has increased. Naturally, long queues started to form in front of the gate. As a result, nowadays people are being charged for taking photos. If you are going on a route to the north of Bali, you will inevitably pass by this gate. You can take a photo or not, it’s up to you. But if you are curious, you can stop for a few minutes and see the gate.

Git Git Waterfall

17 km north of Ulan Danu, you can reach the waterfall, which is the most beautiful of the majestic and impressive Bali waterfalls, flowing in all its glory from a height of 40 meters. After entering, you can walk 15 minutes on foot along the pathway. At the entrance, if you have your camera with you, do not take it out of your bag, otherwise there is a separate fee for it.

Sekumpul Waterfall

Spanning 1,300 km² and flowing 100 meters high, the waterfall consists of a total of seven waterfalls. The waterfall, also known as Gerombong Falls, is located in the north of the island of Bali, 76 km from Denpasar.

Banyu Wana Waterfall

One of the waterfalls we visited in the North was Banyu Wana Waterfall. After parking our motorbike at the entrance of the waterfall and paying the entrance fee, we started walking downhill. They have made a paved path for the forest that is very comfortable to walk. Those who do not want to walk can rent a motor taxi from the entrance point.

Likewise, if you tell the staff below that you want a taxi on the way back, they will notify you upstairs and immediately direct a motorcycle. There are two waterfalls here. We preferred to go to the one on the left after the signboard appeared.

If you are going to come to this area, we recommend other waterfalls in the immediate vicinity: Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, Aling Aling, Fiji Waterfall (very close to Sekumpul waterfall) and Nung Nung Waterfall further south. A little south of Nung Nung is Leke Leke waterfall.

Another reminder is that if you are going to rent a motorbike, make sure you wear thick clothes. The altitude increases as you go north of the island. We recommend that you even wear gloves as you will also get wind while using a motorbike.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN UBUD

You can visit all of the places listed below in one full day. One way from the center of Ubud is 88 km. If you take into account the return, it is 176 km. We do not recommend renting a motorbike. Because it would be a really tiring distance. Your only remaining option is to rent a car with a driver.

Besakih Temple

The largest and most sacred temple on the island of Bali is known as Besakih “Mother Temple”. Built on the slope of Mount Agung, the temple is a complex of 23 separate temples and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995. Said to have been built in the 14th century, locals say it was built in the 11th century.

Transportation : It is 30 km east of Tirta Empul.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Tirta Gannga means water from the Ganges river. Built by the Karangsem Kingdom in 1940-1950, the temple was severely damaged by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. After the damage, the temple was restored to its present form with a serious restoration work. The 11-story fountain, the statues in the pool and the surrounding landscape draw you into the magic.

Pura Lempuyang Temple

It is an ancient Hindu temple in Karangasem in the east of Bali. It is also one of the most ironic places in Bali. Visitors set off at dawn to take photos here. Keep in mind that there will be a line no matter how early you arrive. It is useful to set off at 5 in the morning to be there. If you arrive later than the specified time, you will wait in line for 2 hours. If you arrive towards noon, this waiting time increases up to 3-4 hours.

Dress Code: It is mandatory to wear a sarong when entering the temple. A sarong is a piece of fabric that wraps below the waist. And your shoulders must be covered.

Lahangan Sweet

The best view of Agung volcano in Bali is from the Lahangan Sweet viewpoint. This is also located in the Karangasem area in the east of Bali. The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset. If you are going to Lempuyan Temple, you can leave it for the evening. If taking photos at Lempuyan is not essential for you, then you can go to Lahangan at sunrise.

For a cloudless, clear sky, the best time to visit is during the dry season from March to November.

After you see the wooden sign that says Lahangan Sweet, if you are coming by motorbike, you will need to park your motorbike here and walk for 10 minutes. When you walk down the path, you will see the platform fixed to the tree.

Since it is a dirt road, do not forget sneakers for climbing, sweatshirt and drinking water as the weather is likely to be cold.

Air Terjun Kuning

We have come to the end of the list of places to visit in the east of Bali. After visiting the above places, you can visit Air Terjun Kuning waterfall on your way back. This waterfall is not very crowded because it is far from Ubud. It is a magnificent waterfall flowing quite high for the greenery. It also gives you the opportunity to enter the water as it has natural ponds.

UBUD HIKING TRAILS

Ubud rice fields have been in existence since the 9th century. The best way to discover the magical and unique side of the rice fields around Ubud is to walk around them. There is no doubt that you will come across traditional village life and natural landscapes during your trip.

Ubud hiking trails have become very popular day by day. Since it offers more options to its visitors with its multiple routes, you do not stick to only one route. Since each route has different kilometers, it is up to you which one you prefer and trekking.

Do not forget to take water, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and some money with you before trekking. The cafes and restaurants along the route will meet your needs when you want to sit and relax.

Campuhan Ridge Walk: It is a 2-hour trekking trail. You will have the chance to see countless villages along this trail, passing through rice fields and wooded areas. The trail is one of the most well-known and popular routes as it is often walked by local people and European tourists. Early morning or late evening is the best time for trekking.

You will cross the corner of Ubud Traditional Market towards the bridge. Before reaching the bridge, go through the Warwick IBAH sign and head towards the parking lot. At the entrance of the parking lot, you will see the Warwick Ibah sign again. Going to the hill is written under that sign. If you follow the direction, you will arrive directly at the Campuhan trail.

Sari Organic Walk: Rather than Campuhan, on this trail you will see and pass through more rice fields. The trail is very easy so you will not have any difficulties.

From the corner of Ubud Traditional Market on Jl. Raya Ubud on the right side of the road. If you follow the Sari Organik sign, you can easily reach the trail.

JI.Kajeng Walk: In fact, this route is the most authentic of the hiking trails. During your walk you can see temples, hotels, restaurants, farmers and animals.

Overview of Bali

The island of Bali is 3.2 km (2 miles) from the island of Java, 8 degrees south of the equator. The island is 153 km from east to west, 112 km from south to north and has an area of 5,780 km2. Bali is the most famous island of Indonesia, the 15th largest country in the world.

The highest mountain is Mount Agung at 3,142 meters. It is also called the main mountain because it is active.

There are two active volcanoes. These are Mount Agung and Mount Batur. When Mt. Agung erupted in 1963, 1500 people lost their lives due to this eruption.

The main production in Bali is rice in the south of the mountains (because they are wide) and coffee in the north (because they are steeper and sloping to the sea). Of course, rice and vegetables are also grown, but the main production is coffee.

The longest river is the Ayung River with 75 km.

Bali has 3 islands. Nusa islands. Gili islands are not part of Bali but Lombok.

How to get to Bali

The shortest and fastest way to go to Bali island is the direct flight option. Since Turkish Airlines has launched new flights from Istanbul to Denpasar Ngurah Rai Airport as of 2019, those who want to fly directly can choose this option.

Another way is the connecting flight option. This is our main recommendation. The only airline we use for connecting flights is Singapore Airlines. It is possible to reach Bali from Singapore either for a few hours or by choosing long connecting flights.

So what is the advantage of a connecting flight? This question is the most crucial part of the job. If you are traveling with Singapore Airline, we recommend you to choose long connecting flights. In this way, you will also visit Singapore during your layover. Therefore, you will kill two birds with one stone. If you take a short stopover on the way out and a long stopover on the way back, you will also get Singapore out of the way on the way back. In addition, since the prices are cheaper than direct flights, it will be a flight that will not strain your budget too much.

Other options for connecting flights are Qatar and Emirates. Since we prefer Star Alliance member airlines, we are not very familiar with these two companies on the Bali route!

How to get around Bali

Rent A Scooter:

Our indispensable means of transportation in Asian countries is motorcycle. We rent a motorcycle for the day we are going to stay and go wherever we want, whenever we want. If we don’t rent a motorcycle, we have to visit the places we want to visit through tours. If we choose this way, we face time constraints. If you want to be more comfortable, without time limitations and more affordable, our only recommendation is to rent a motorcycle. It is also a very popular means of transportation on the island of Bali.

If you are going to rent a motorcycle, it is mandatory to wear a helmet. If the police see it, they fine you instantly.

Daily motorcycle rental costs between 8-15 USD depending on the type of motorcycle.

Taxi:

The most convenient transportation options in Bali are Grab, Gojek and Blue Bird taxi app. Gojek is the most preferred compared to Grab. Gojek also has motorcycle taxis. If you don’t know how to ride a motorcycle and don’t want to waste minutes in Bali’s notorious traffic, we highly recommend renting a Gojek.

Best time to visit Bali

Since Bali is located 890 km south of the Equator, it has a tropical climate throughout the year, i.e. for 12 months. Bali has a tropical climate and has two seasons, wet and dry season. Paying attention to the seasons when going to Bali is important for the activities you will do. For example, diving, volcano climbing, island tours and other such activities require good weather conditions.

Dry Season (May-September)

CANGGU

Canggu is a more untouched and less crowded part of Bali than the other touristic parts of the island. If you are more of a traveler than a tourist, Canggu is the perfect place for you. Batu Balong, Echo and Mengening beaches are the ideal places for surf lovers. If you are a yoga enthusiast and have come to Bali for this purpose, you can easily fulfill this desire with the yoga centers opened in Canggu. Although it does not offer as much variety as Ubud, we can guarantee that it will satisfy you in terms of yoga.

If you want to hang out more on the beach and go to beach bars, Canggu is one of the good choices for this. Old Man’s on Batu Balong beach, Sand Bar on Echo beach, Le Pirate Canggu Beach Bar, 707 Beachbern are some of the best places in the area.

SEMINYAK

It is one of the most popular beaches on the west coast of the island of Bali, north of Kuta and Legian beaches. It is a very crowded area with local cafes, modern restaurants, chic boutiques and luxury hotels. Therefore, there is no time to get bored. You can spend the day along the beach and enjoy the famous sunsets of Bali in the evening at Potato Head, Ku De Ta, La Plancha and Moonlite Kitchen – Bar. Other than that, there is nothing else interesting to see in the area….

ULUWATU

Uluwatu Temple is located in this region, which also hosts magnificent beaches for surfing and beaches suitable for swimming. The beaches in the south and southwest of the island are the best places to swim. These beaches are Balangan, Dreamland, Padang Padang, Bingin and Tegal Wangi Beach. After visiting the beaches during the day, you can visit Uluwatu temple or Single Fin Beach Club for a sunset.

Jimbaran is located close to this area. Jimbaran is an area with dozens of seafood restaurants along the beach and is famous for its dinners. According to some, dinners in Jimbaran are a very touristic activity. We do not recommend you to go. But we still wanted to mention it for your information.

What You Need to Know Before Traveling to Bali

-Do not plan to go to Bali on the day of silence, known as Nyepi Day in Bali. Starting at 06:00 on March 25, 2020, the day of silence ends on March 26, 2020. On this date, everything, including the airport, is closed and the island is silent.

-When entering the temples, it is mandatory to wear a sarong, which covers you from the waist down.

-Don’t forget to count while exchanging money

-Do not drink water from the tap. But you can consume ice. Because all ice is under state control.

-Make sure to bargain

-Since tattoo studios in Bali do not meet universal standards, you can contract HIV from many of them. Avoid getting a tattoo in Bali, no matter how popular it is.

-We recommend avoiding Arak, a drink made from the palm tree in Malaysia and Indonesia. Between 10 and 20 local people die every day in Indonesia due to the use of Arak. Not only locals but also many tourists have died in the past years due to the use of poorly produced arak. The main source of death is menthol poisoning.

-The first thing you should check before swimming in Bali is whether there is a red flag hanging on the beach. If there is a red flag, know that it is strictly forbidden and dangerous to swim in that area. Especially on the beaches from Kuta to Changgu, there is a serious reverse bottom current. Lombok Island: Lombok island is the most important place to visit. The year we went to the Gili Islands, we had the chance to visit Lombok Island. It is a very virgin and non-touristy island compared to Bali. We strongly recommend you to spend at least 7 days on this island. As you can see, if you allocate 2 weeks to Bali, 1 week to Gili and Nusa islands and 1 week to Lombok, 30 days is barely enough.

What to consider when visiting temples?

-Cover up when entering temples. The garment worn like a skirt is called sarong and in local language it is called kamen.

-Do not enter temples if you have an open wound or if women are menstruating.

-Always remove your shoes before entering the temples.

-When visiting temples, do not go wherever your feet take you. Some parts are not allowed to be visited because they are sacred.

-If there are monkeys in the temple you will visit, do not wear dangling earrings and glasses. Do not carry anything in your hand except your backpack.

Is Bali expensive?

We believe that one of the most curious things about Bali is the budget issue. How much is accommodation in Bali, Bali daily tours, temple entrance fees etc. questions are going on and on. Now let’s itemize what and how much budget is needed for the island of Bali respectively.

Accommodation: Cheap hostels and hostels on the island of Bali usually range from 5 to 14 USD per night. We would like to point out that the accommodation type at the prices we mentioned does not have a shared bathroom and private room. If you want to stay in a budget hotel – double room (including breakfast), your budget should be between 22 and 50 USD. Hotels in the mid-luxury range start from 200 USD per room per night, while luxury hotels start from 500 USD per night.

Eating and Drinking: Local food and street food is usually quite cheap under 1 usd. The main meal you will eat from street vendors costs 1-2 usd on average. But since you are not used to it, instead of eating from the street, you can eat local food in restaurants called Warung at a more affordable price than normal restaurants. In restaurants where you can eat western cuisine, the prices are about 10 usd.

Fast food will cost about 4,50 usd, while a beer at the bar will cost an average of 2 usd.

Waterfall entrances: 0,70 cents to 1,5 usd. Parking fees at the entrance to the waterfall are 0.35 to 0.70 cents for a motorcycle.

How To Get Koh Kood Island

To reach Koh Kood island, you first need to arrive in the city of Trat. You can get to Trat from the country’s capital, Bangkok, either by air or by road. The quickest way to travel is by plane. Once you have arrived in Trat, you can proceed to Laem Sok pier and from there, it’s possible to reach Koh Kood by ferry or speedboat. When is the best time to visit Koh Kood island

The temperature on Koh Kood island remains constant throughout the year, with only the humidity levels being higher during the rainy season. There are two main seasons for Koh Kood: the low season, which is the rainy period, and the high season, which is the dry period. The hottest months on the island are March, April, and May during the high season.

Rent Motorbike in Koh Kood

The best and economical way to explore Koh Kood is by renting a scooter. You can rent a scooter for approximately 250-300 baht per day on Koh Kood. Renting a motorbike is the most convenient option for getting from one place to another. Taxis are not only more expensive but also limit your freedom of movement.

Money

The currency of the country is Thai Baht. 1 USD equals 35.63 THB. This is the exchange rate for 2023. You can verify the current rate on the XE website. There are ATMs on the island. Our recommendation is to convert your currency to Thai Baht on the mainland before coming to the island and bring cash with you.

Koh Kood Beaches

Koh Kood Island is a perfect honeymoon destination for us. Since there aren’t too many activities to do on the island, the best option is to take a dip in its numerous beaches and savor the taste of a tropical vacation. Believe me, there are so many beaches to choose from that you won’t have a hard time deciding which one to pick.

1.Ao Tapao Beach

One of the longest and finest beaches on Koh Kood Island is located in the same area as the Sapan Namleuk pier. This beach boasts a pristine stretch of white sand extending over 1 km and is accompanied by crystal-clear turquoise waters. Facing directly west, it offers spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand. Along this beach, you can find some charming rustic bungalow accommodations like Koh Kood Cabana Resort, Medee Resort, and See Far Resort.

2.Klong Chao Beach/Hat Khlong Chao

It is the central and most popular beach on the island. The beach is 800 meters long and there are no markets or similar shops. It is an ideal beach for enjoying the sea and sun in clear waters and soft white sand.

The beach is home to four luxury resorts: Wendy The Pool Resort, TinkerBell Privacy Resort, High Season Pool Villa, and Peter Pan Resort. You can reach the Ban Klong Chao area, which is the center of Koh Kood Island, by a 5-minute walk from the beach. Here, you can find affordable dining options and also budget-friendly accommodation.

3.Ao Ngam Kho

Ngamkho Bay is a bay located on the western coast of the island and is definitely a must-visit, even a must-swim spot.

4.Bang Bao Beach

This is the most renowned area of the island. You can take a swim in front of Siam Beach Resort. Located in the southwest of the island, it boasts a 400-meter-long stretch of pristine white sand, making it an ideal beach for swimming. The surrounding hills act as a natural defense wall for the beach, making it less windy, with warm and calm waters compared to other beaches on Koh Kood. It is also an excellent choice for families with children, as it lacks rocks and is one of the best areas for snorkeling.

5.Ao Takian Beach

The western side of the beach, extending towards the rocky center, is more than 1200 meters long, while the eastern side is 750 meters long. It is the most beautiful sea we encountered on Koh Kood Island, located in the southwest.

6.Ao Khlong Hin Beach

It is the most famous beach on the island in recent years. Taking a dip in the sea through the palm trees extending from within offers a unique experience. The color of the sea is neither turquoise nor green. We guarantee it is the most beautiful shade you will ever see between the two colors.

Khlong Hin Beach is located in the southwest of Koh Kood, just after Ao Phrao Beach. It is a relatively small beach with only a few rustic bungalow-style accommodation options. Apart from this accommodation, you won’t find any other restaurants here. It’s important to note that during low tide, the sea can recede quite far, so we recommend planning your visit according to the sea level.

7.Ban Ao Jak

The beach on the southwest of the island is 500 meters long, and there is only one resort along the beach.

8.Ao Phrao Beach

Ao Phrao Beach is located on the southernmost tip of the western coast of Koh Kood. Beyond this point, the island is largely inaccessible, covered with dense forests and rocky shores. With a length of approximately 1 km, Ao Prao is the longest and most beautiful beach on the island, hosting five hotels. At the northern end of the beach, there is a small fishing village along the canal, where you can find some restaurants.

Things To Do in Koh Kood

To be honest, there aren’t extensive lists of activities to do on Koh Kood Island. One highly recommended activity on the island is visiting the waterfall. This allows you to go trekking through pristine, untouched forests. Afterward, you can cool off in the pool of the waterfall, which is a perfect way to refresh after the hike.

Ao Salat (Salad) Gpyse Village

Ao Salat is a small sea gypsy village located on the eastern coast of Koh Kood Island. This village is home to a mix of both Thai and Cambodian settlers. Visiting Ao Salat offers a real glimpse into Thailand’s traditional Sea Gypsy way of life.

Ao Salat is constructed with raised wooden walkways over the ocean and stilt houses built on the sea. You can take an easy walk to meet the friendly local people in the village.

Go snorkeling!

You can either join snorkeling tours on the island or do it for free if you have your own masks. We recommend Khlong Hin Beach for snorkeling. If you want a more professional snorkeling experience to see more underwater creatures, you can purchase a diving tour to Koh Rang National Park.

Klong Chao Waterfall

The most beautiful place to see on the island is Klong Chao Waterfall. If you’re not staying on Koh Kood Island, you can also visit the waterfall with tour companies from Koh Chang and Koh Mak. While the waterfall may not have a very high drop, its natural pool and lush green surroundings make it a stunning and enjoyable place to spend time. After reaching the park entrance, you’ll need to walk along an 800-meter jungle path to reach the waterfall. There is no entrance fee!

Klong Yai Kee

The waterfall known by its Thai name “Nam Tok Khlong Yai Ki” is smaller than Klong Chao Waterfall. Taking a short break from the sea and enjoying a swim here, surrounded by nature, can be a delightful experience. The best time to visit is between August and January. If you go during the dry season, you may not find flowing water.

Best Time to Visit Koh Kood

The temperature on Koh Kood Island remains fairly consistent throughout the year, with the main difference being the humidity during the rainy season. Koh Kood has two main seasons: the low season, which is the rainy season, and the high season, which is the dry season. The hottest months during the high season are March, April, and May.

High Season: November – May

Low Season: June – October

The driest period on Koh Kood Island is in December, while the wettest period is in September. This means that December is mostly rain-free, while September experiences more rainfall.

Even though June to October is the rainy season on Koh Kood, it’s still a great island to visit year-round. The rainy season doesn’t necessarily mean that it rains every day. However, if you prefer to avoid rain during your vacation, it’s advisable to visit during other months.

Additionally, those planning to visit Koh Kood during the low season (June-October) should keep in mind that ferry services may not be as frequent as during the high season.

Best Places To Eat in Koh Kood

The island is surrounded by stunning bays and magnificent resorts, without the bustling markets, bazaars, and crowded streets found in more well-known destinations like Phuket and Koh Samui. Typically, you can enjoy your meals at the hotel where you’re staying or at restaurants in the surrounding hotels or on some of the beaches. However, there are still dining options available outside of your hotel.

Kruua Mae Tuk

This restaurant is located within the Soneva Kiri hotel and serves dishes made from ingredients grown on Koh Chang Island and fresh daily catches from local fishermen. The restaurant is open every day except Wednesdays and Sundays.

The View

Noochy Seafood

Noochy Seafood has long been known as one of the most famous and best seafood restaurants on Koh Kood. This seafood paradise is located in the unique floating fishing village in Aow Yai. If you want to get up from your beach bed just to taste the most incredible seafood, you should definitely visit this place.

Heaven Sense

Known for offering the highest quality pizza and pasta experience you can find on Koh Kood, this place is famous for dishes prepared with fresh ingredients and even ingredients imported from Italy. While the prices may be a bit high, the portions are very generous. It’s considered one of the most luxurious places on Koh Kood. Tawan Eko Bar

How To Get Koh Kood Island

Koh Kood Island is a small Thai island located 45 km away from the mainland. The only way to reach the island is by sea. To get to Koh Kood, you should first make your way to the city of Trat. You can reach Trat from Bangkok by plane or bus. After arriving in Trat, you should go to the Laem Sok pier in the city and from there, board a ferry or speedboat to Koh Kood. Below, we have explained in detail all the ways you can reach Koh Kood:

By Plane

If you are traveling from Bangkok to Koh Kood, the quickest and most comfortable option is by plane. Bangkok Airways offers a one-hour flight to Trat. Other airlines do not operate flights to Trat from Bangkok. You can check flight schedules on the Bangkok Airways website.

Once you arrive at Trat Airport, you can hire a taxi for a one-hour journey to Laem Sok Pier, which costs around 500 THB. From Laem Sok Pier, you can take a ferry to Koh Kood.

Several ferry companies serve Koh Kood Island:

Ko Kut Express: You can board the high-speed ferry from Laem Sok Pier and reach Koh Kood in 30 minutes. The fare is 500 THB, or 600 THB if you choose the speedboat option.

Boonsiri Ferry: Boonsiri Ferry operates two daily trips, with a journey time of 1 hour and a fare of 600 THB per person. The departure times are at 10:45 AM and 2:20 PM. We recommend checking the current ferry schedules on the Boonsiri Ferry website.

Seudamgo: Seudamgo is another ferry company that offers a 1-hour journey from Laem Sok Pier to Koh Kood. The departure times are at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Be sure to check the ferry schedules on their website. The fare is 600 THB per person.

No matter which company you purchase your ticket from, they all make a stop at Koh Bak Island before reaching Koh Kood. Travelers who plan to stay on Koh Mak Island instead of Koh Kood can also purchase tickets from these companies.

By Bus

If you prefer to travel by road from Bangkok to Koh Kood, you can purchase combined tickets (bus+ferry) either through 12Go.Asia or from tour agencies. The travel time varies between 8 to 9 hours depending on the company you choose, and the prices range from 1,100 to 1,200 THB.

If you plan to buy tickets in advance, you can safely purchase them from the 12Go.Asia website. After entering “Bangkok” and “Koh Kood” in the search bar, select your desired date and the number of passengers, and then press the search button. All available transportation options will be listed. 12Go.Asia is a widely used transportation booking platform for our travels in Asia, and we have not encountered any issues with it.

This option provides a convenient and cost-effective way to reach Koh Kood by combining bus and ferry transportation.

From Koh Chang Island

If you are traveling from Koh Chang to Koh Kood, it’s important to know that the fastest way to reach Koh Kood is by sea. You can purchase ferry tickets for the Koh Chang to Koh Kood route and check transfer schedules on the Boonsiri Ferry website.

The ferry from Koh Chang’s Bang Sao Pier to Koh Kood departs at 09:00 AM, and the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. The fare is 900 THB per person.

This option provides a quick and convenient sea route from Koh Chang to Koh Kood, allowing you to reach your destination efficiently while enjoying the scenic views of the sea.

Soneva Kiri Airport (Koh Mai Si-MSI)

While there is no public airport on Koh Kood Island, there is a solution for those who have the means. If you plan to stay at the island’s top-rated resort, Soneva Kiri, you can reach Koh Kood from Bangkok in just 80 minutes using Soneva Kiri’s private planes. After arriving at Koh Mai Si Airport, you can transfer to speedboats, and within 5 minutes, you’ll reach your paradise resort.

You can visit the Soneva Kiri website to check flight schedules and options for both shared and private flights. This exclusive service offers a luxurious and efficient way to access Koh Kood for those staying at Soneva Kiri.

Travel Around Koh Kood Island

Motorbike Rental

The best and most economical way to explore Koh Kood is by renting a scooter. You can rent a scooter for approximately 250-300 baht per day on the island. While the roads may be narrow, they are generally quiet and well-maintained. Just like in other Thai islands and cities, we strongly recommend renting a motorbike here too. Trust us; exploring Thailand without a motorbike feels like you’re missing out. With your own motorbike, you can travel freely without the need for taxis and without extra expenses.

Songthaew – Taxi

Another transportation option on Koh Kood is the Songthaew taxis. However, using this method to explore the island can be quite costly. You may come across signs quoting prices like “2000 baht for an island tour.” If you need to get to the pier or another hotel, Songthaew services are usually shared, making the prices more affordable.

Imagine a tropical postcard in front of your eyes. What you see is a pristine white sandy beach, backed by lush green tropical forest, and in front of it, stretches of tranquil turquoise waters. This is exactly what Phi Phi Island looks like.

Here, there are two main islands: Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. Phi Phi Don is the larger one, hosting all the hotels, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Phi Phi Leh, on the other hand, lies just across from Phi Phi Don, uninhabited and smaller. You can only reach Phi Phi Leh through day trips.

ABOUT PHI PHI ISLAND

The first settlement on the previously unoccupied and undiscovered Phi Phi Island occurred in 1950, after it had remained vacant until the year 1945. People arrived from Phang Nga Bay to the north of the island. Individuals from Krabi and other regions established colonies here.

Currently, the majority of the island’s population consists of Muslim fishermen. Before the influx of tourists to the island, the land was used for coconut plantations. However, with the discovery of the island and the gradual increase in visitors, coconut plantations have given way to restaurants and hotels.

While the term “Phi Phi Island” might evoke the notion of a single island, it actually refers to a group of six islands located off the southern coast of Thailand, under the jurisdiction of Krabi. The most renowned within this archipelago are Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh. Koh Phi Phi Don is the larger of the two (28 km² – 8 km in length, 3.5 km in width) and hosts the majority of settlement, whereas Koh Phi Phi Leh, the smaller of the two, is a destination exclusively for day tours. Following Koh Phi Phi Don, the second largest island in the group is Koh Phi Phi Leh, known famously as the location where Leonardo DiCaprio starred in the movie “The Beach,” which was filmed in 2000.

On December 26, 2004, the Indian Ocean Tsunami struck, leading to the devastation of Koh Phi Phi Don Island. Both of the island’s bays succumbed to the force of the water, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, and around 70% of the structures on the island were destroyed. Following the tsunami, with aid pouring in from all corners of the world, Phi Phi Island was rebuilt, and today, it stands as one of Thailand’s most breathtaking islands.

The Phi Phi Islands, among the most stunning in Southeast Asia, have evolved over the years to attract visitors beyond those joining daily island tours. Increasingly, it has become a destination that draws visitors in, showcasing its allure day by day.

WHERE IS PHI PHI ISLAND & HOW TO GET TO PHI PHI ISLAND

The island, situated in the Andaman Sea, is located 45 km southwest of Phuket and 40 km southeast of Krabi.

The only way to reach the island is by taking boats from Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Lanta. Since Phi Phi does not have its own airport, if you’re coming from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, the northern city of Chiang Mai, or any other city, you should fly to either Phuket Airport or Krabi Airport. After arriving at Phuket or Krabi, you can proceed to the harbor and board boats from there.

The safest online platform to purchase ferry or speedboat tickets is 12go.Asia. Without any hesitation, you can visit the provided link, select your route and date, and acquire your tickets through online payment. With 12go.Asia, you can not only purchase ferry tickets but also opt for combined bus+ferry/speedboat tickets if desired.

While ferry journeys take 2 hours, speedboats take around 45 minutes. There’s a difference in cost between the two options. If time is not a constraint, you might prefer the more budget-friendly ferry journey.

Upon arrival at the island, you will be asked to pay a fee of 20 THB at the pier. This fee contributes to the island’s cleanliness and is a nominal amount. Everyone is required to pay this landing fee.

HOW TO GET AROUND THE PHI PHI ISLAND

There are no motorcycles or vehicles on Phi Phi Island. You can get around on foot or by using local boats called “longtail” boats. The island is quite small, so you can walk to almost every place. Since there’s no direct access to the beaches on the backside of the island, you can use local boats.

If you want to visit Maya Bay on a day tour, you’ll also need to get these local boats. Another option is renting a canoe. You can rent a canoe to reach recommended beaches like Nui Beach and Monkey Beach.

BEST BEACHES IN PHI PHI ISLAND

Phi Phi Don Island boasts two main beaches. One is the Tonsai Beach, where boats and ferries dock, and the other is Loh Dalum Beach. Due to its shallow waters, boats cannot approach Loh Dalum Beach, making it one of the most pristine areas on the island. It remains untouched by the noise of crowds and boat engines, offering a serene escape for both residents and visitors.

Loh Dalum Beach

The best hours for swimming in the sea at Loh Dalum are between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. After 3:00 PM, Monkey Beach becomes another option for swimming. As walking to the beach located northwest of Loh Dalum is not feasible, you can rent a boat to reach Monkey Beach.

Laem Tong Beach 

Located on the northern part of the island, this is the most beautiful beach with crystal blue waters, accessible only by boats. It is situated directly across from Bamboo Island, so close that you might feel like you could swim there with just a few strokes.

Loh Bagao Bay

Stretching 800 meters in length, Loh Bagao is one of Phi Phi Island’s longest beaches. If you’re up for a challenging 3 km journey from Tonsai and don’t mind the effort, you can get here without paying for transportation. However, keep in mind that the journey can be quite strenuous!

Long Beach

Lastly, there’s Long Beach on the right side of Tonsai. You can reach Long Beach by walking from the center in about 50 minutes. Another option is to rent a longtail boat from the central pier for around 300 THB per person. If you choose to walk, you can also access the small and secluded Viking Beach along the way.

BEST THINGS TO DO PHI PHI ISLAND

Phi Phi Island, as mentioned, is indeed a tiny island, and naturally, it has limited places to explore. Since we recommend staying a maximum of 3 days on Phi Phi Island, we’ve compiled a detailed list of all the places to see for your convenience.

MAYA BAY

One of the most beautiful activities to enjoy on Phi Phi Island is taking a tour to Maya Bay. You can book this tour through agencies in the center or opt for a more personalized experience by renting a private longtail boat. If you’re curious about our opinion, we recommend renting a longtail boat.

During our visits to Phi Phi, we always choose to stay at Long Beach. The small stands on the beachfront of our hotel offer private boat rental and water sports services. By purchasing a private tour of 3-4 hours for around 3000 THB, you can avoid crowded tours and have a much more comfortable experience while exploring the area.

Before going on a Maya Bay tour, there’s one crucial piece of information you should be aware of: you need to start the tour at 7:00 AM. If you start later, your experience might be marred by the crowds from daily tours coming from Phi Phi, Krabi, and Phuket.

In 2018, Maya Bay was closed to tourism to protect its coral reefs and wildlife. Following this period of natural rehabilitation, it reopened on August 1, 2022. Before the closure, boats could enter Maya Bay itself. However, after the rehabilitation process, a pier was built behind Maya Bay. Now, all boats anchor there, and visitors can reach Maya Bay’s backside by walking approximately 5-10 minutes from the pier.

After arriving Maya Bay, it’s a recent practice to remove shoes and sandals before stepping onto the beach. One of the strictest rules now is that swimming is not allowed at Maya Bay. The only permission granted is to walk into the water up to knee level and take photographs.

If you’re taking a boat tour, aside from Maya Bay, other places you’ll visit include Pi Leh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, Loh Samah, and Palong Bays.

Pi Leh Lagoon is our personal favorite after Maya Bay. The color of the lagoon and its resemblance to the Big Lagoon in El Nido, Philippines, make it one of the most stunning places. Remember, if you come later in the day or miss the early morning hours, you might not be able to swim from the boats into the lagoon.

Monkey Island, a 150-meter-long strip of shoreline, is located 700 meters from Tonsai Bay. It’s important not to confuse this with Monkey Bay, which can only be accessed by boat.

Monkey Bay is inhabited by wild monkeys, making it less suitable for spending the entire day swimming. Moreover, due to the thieving nature of all the monkeys on the island, if you go into the water and come back, you might find that your belongings left on the beach have disappeared completely.

Viking Cave is a cavern where swiftlets build their nests using their saliva. These nests are then collected and sold. Swiftlet nest soup is considered one of the most expensive foods globally. The soup was created by a Siamese (Thai) individual named Hao Yieng in 1750. Today, a kilogram of these nests can be sold for anywhere between 2,000 to 10,000 USD. During the tour, you’ll only pass by the entrance of Viking Cave. If you go on a guided tour, your guide will provide you with this information.

BAMBOO ISLAND

Bamboo Island (Koh Phai) is situated 5 km northeast of Phi Phi Don Island. Decorated with bamboo trees, this palm-sized island features the most beautiful spot for swimming in the region. Combining a trip to Bamboo Island with a Maya Bay tour is possible.

Instead of a 4-hour boat tour, you can rent a full-day boat charter. However, our suggestion is to either visit early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the crowds. Therefore, it’s advisable to plan a separate visit to Bamboo Island on a different day, rather than incorporating it into your Maya Bay tour.

CLIMB TO THE PHI PHI VIEWPOINT

Another must-do activity on Phi Phi Island is to climb to the viewpoint and witness the breathtaking panoramic view of Phi Phi. There are a total of 3 viewpoints. The entrance fee for viewpoint 1 and 2 is 30 THB, while viewpoint 3’s entrance fee is 20 THB. Once you reach viewpoint 1, spend some time there but then continue on to the higher viewpoints without lingering for too long.

From here, it’s just a 5-minute walk to reach viewpoint 2. The trails to both viewpoints aren’t demanding, and you can even sit at the nearby bar and enjoy a drink with the stunning panorama in front of you. The wooden platform just below the tree offers a view of Tonsai and Loh Dalum beaches from the same angle. It takes about 10 minutes to reach viewpoint 3 from here, and you can easily find it by following the signs. Being the highest point, it not only provides a view of Tonsai and Loh Dalum but also treats you with a bonus view of Bamboo Island and Phi Phi Leh Island.

SCUBA DIVING

Phi Phi Island is one of the preferred destinations in Thailand for scuba diving. Thanks to its rich underwater biodiversity and diverse coral species, it offers an enchanting underwater journey. The island’s surrounding waters host exceptional diving spots like Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck, and Anemone Reef.

The best months for scuba diving are from January to April. During this period, there is minimal rainfall, and the underwater visibility is exceptional. This clear visibility enhances your diving experience, making it even more enjoyable. If you’re hesitant about scuba diving, another option is snorkeling. The best snorkeling spots on the island are Ao Toh Ko and Phak Nam Bay.

ROCK CLIMBING

If you’re an adrenaline enthusiast, a highly recommended activity for you would be rock climbing. The presence of tall limestone cliffs makes Phi Phi Island an ideal destination for rock climbing. Climbers first started coming here in 1980, and they’ve since opened up new routes on these cliffs.

You can go rock climbing at several places on Phi Phi Island. Here are some popular spots:

Ao Pilay Wall, Ao Ling Wall, Hin Tak, Tonsai Wall, Tiger Wall, Eagle Wall, Cobra Wall, Hua Ling Wall.

It’s important to note that while rock climbing can be an exhilarating activity, it also requires proper equipment, training, and safety precautions. If you’re not an experienced climber, consider hiring a guide or joining a guided climbing tour to ensure your safety.

PHI PHI NIGHTLIFE

Phi Phi Island’s atmosphere is the kind that will entertain everyone. From daytime activities to nighttime entertainment, this tropical island has something to meet your expectations. Known for its beach parties, Phi Phi Island offers a vibrant nightlife, with all the entertainment venues located along Loh Dalum Beach. There are also cafes and pubs in the Tonsai center, but the real nightlife happens at the beachfront bars.

Another popular nighttime activity on the island is fire shows. These shows take place in front of the bars along Loh Dalum Beach every evening. After the professional fire show, fire games commence, and you can even join in by passing through the fire or jumping over fire ropes.

WHERE TO STAY IN PHI PHI ISLAND

Visitors to the island are mostly young backpackers. It’s not a recommended destination for luxury-seeking travelers. In fact, what we’re suggesting isn’t solely related to accommodation. While there are luxury hotels on the island, stepping outside your hotel, you can’t avoid immersing yourself in the bohemian ambiance of the island. There are no luxury restaurants, nightclubs, or beach clubs.

Long Beach: For those planning to stay at Long Beach, our recommendation is Phi Phi The Beach Resort and Paradise Beach Resort. Prioritize Phi Phi The Beach Resort. Paradise Beach Resort is a comparatively lower-class hotel with fewer amenities, yet it’s more expensive. However, if you can’t find availability at Phi Phi The Beach Resort, you might consider staying in the beachfront rooms of Paradise Beach Resort.

Ton Sai Beach: Chao Koh Phi Phi Hotel and Resort ($$$), Mama Beach Residence ($$)

In reality, Krabi is larger than you might think. The most popular region in Krabi, Ao Nang, is located 28 km away from Krabi Airport. Another sought-after area is Railay Beach, which is accessible only by boat as there’s no direct land route. The only way to reach it is via a 30-minute boat ride from Ao Nang.

If you’re planning your Krabi trip on your own, you have three options for getting around to explore the surroundings:

Hiring a Driver or Using Grab: You can either hire a driver or use the Grab app for transportation. If you’re comfortable with these options, they can provide convenient and flexible transportation.

Renting a Motorcycle: If you know how to ride a motorcycle – which is the most recommended and preferred method – renting a motorbike is a great choice. It gives you the freedom to move around at your own pace and explore the area.

Joining Day Tours: Another option is to join organized day tours. However, this tends to be the most expensive choice.

Remember to prioritize your safety while exploring Krabi, especially if you’re opting for options like motorcycle rental. Always wear helmets, follow traffic rules, and drive cautiously.

PLACES TO VISIT IN KRABI

AO NANG BEACH

We placed Ao Nang at the beginning of our list since it’s the focal point of attraction in Krabi.While Ao Nang Beach may not be the most sought-after spot for swimming, its sunset view resembles a picturesque canvas and serves as the perfect way to conclude your day. If you’re looking for a place to take a dip closer to the center, our recommendation is to head to Noppharat Thara Beach. Given that all travelers flock to Ao Nang, Noppharat Thara can be a wonderful choice to escape the crowds and enjoy a more serene atmosphere.

KRABI 4 ISLAND TOUR

Participating in island tours from Ao Nang is the easiest option. Among our tours, our favorite is the 4 Islands Tour. Depending on your preference, you can choose between a speedboat or a longtail boat tour. The places you’ll visit during the tour are as follows:

Phra Nang Beach (Railay): This is the most famous beach in Krabi. The iconic photo that often comes up when searching for Krabi online is usually from this beach.

Tup Island: The highlight of Tup Island is walking on the sandbar that emerges between the two islands when the tide is low.

Poda Island: This island is usually a lunch stop during the tour. While waiting for the meals to be served, you can explore the underwater world and reefs.

Chicken Island: Adjacent to Tup Island, Chicken Island gets its name from its resemblance to a chicken’s head and neck. It boasts a tranquil beach with calm waters.

HONG ISLAND

Another day trip option from Ao Nang is the Hong Island tour. Located within the boundaries of Than Bok Khorani National Park, Hong Island was one of the most beautiful and unforgettable island tours we experienced in Krabi. When we had the chance to visit the island for the first time in 2009, there were very few visitors, making it incredibly peaceful. Of course, as the years went by, like many other open destinations, Hong Island started gaining popularity and becoming more crowded.

Our latest trip took place in 2023. We rented a private longtail boat from Railay Beach for 3000 THB and headed to Hong Island. We noticed that a pier had been built at the entrance to Hong Island. Additionally, a scenic viewpoint had been constructed. The viewpoint platform was built in 2020. After stepping onto the island, if you continue straight ahead, you’ll reach a set of stairs that lead to the viewpoint. It takes about 20 minutes to climb from the beginning to the very top. After this 20-minute ascent, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view spanning 360 degrees.

The National Park fee is 300 THB per person, separate from the tour cost. This fee is sometimes not considered by people as they assume it’s included in the boat tour. We wanted to emphasize this detail, especially for those who might not think of bringing cash with them due to the nature of the boat tour.

PHI PHI ISLAND TOUR

The third option for an island tour is joining the Phi Phi Island tour. Typically, island tours start around 08:30 and finish around 17:00. The tour boats can accommodate 25 to 50 people. Considering this number and accounting for other boats like yours, you can easily estimate how crowded it might get, we believe.

Our travel guide’s main purpose is to provide you with the most accurate travel plan. We don’t create lists of places to visit just for the sake of it. If that were the case, we would list all possible island tours in Krabi and recommend them all. Our goal is to guide you correctly and have you say, “I’m glad I listened to you,” after following our advice and suggestions.

So, to sum it up, whether you’re in Phuket or Krabi, if you have the option to stay on Phi Phi Island, we strongly recommend not joining Phi Phi tours from these areas!

KOH LANTA ISLAND

Koh Lanta Island is just a 1-hour fast boat ride away from Krabi. You can sacrifice a night in Krabi to stay on Koh Lanta Island. Similarly, in 2009, we crossed from Krabi to Koh Lanta and stayed there for 2 nights. To explore the island, renting a motorcycle is a must. If you don’t know how to ride a motorcycle, it’s not really possible to fully explore the island. In this case, it’s better not to go.

Koh Lanta Island is one of Thailand’s less popular islands, which keeps it quieter. The local population on the island consists of Muslim fishermen who originally came from Malaysia

Here’s a list of things you can do on the island:

1.Spend your day at Nui Bay, Long Beach, Pra Ae Beach, Bamboo Beach, Klong Khong Beach, or Klong Nin Beach.

2.Go diving at Koh Rok Island.

3.Explore Koh Lanta Old Town.

4.Visit the Tiger Cave with a 1-hour climb

5.Venture to Mu Ko National Park with an entrance fee of 200 THB.

6.Explore the village of Ban Saladan.

7.Cool off at Khlong Chak Waterfall.

8.Visit the Emerald Cave on Koh Muk Island. You’ll need to rent a boat since it’s accessible only by sea.

CLIMB TIGER CAVE

The Tiger Cave – Wat Tham Sua is one of Krabi’s most impressive viewpoints. It’s actually a temple complex that you can reach by climbing 1237 steps. We didn’t count the steps ourselves, but there’s a sign at the beginning of the stairs indicating the 1237 steps. It takes about 1 hour to climb to the temple, which is situated 278 meters above the ground.

The temple was built in 1975 and is named after the believed tiger that lived in the area. Apart from the Buddha statue, you’ll also see a tiger statue within the temple.

At the top of the temple stands a massive Buddha statue. The Tiger Cave is located 20 km away from Krabi Town. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, around sunset. Admission is free.

EMERALD POOL AND HOTSPRING

The Emerald Pool, known as Sa Morakat in Thai, is a turquoise blue pond filled with sweet waters flowing down from the mountains. It lies within the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve. Surrounded by lush greenery, you’ll find two pools: the Emerald Pool and the Blue Pool. Walking along the paths within an untouched ecosystem makes it easy to access these pools.

You can explore all the pools within the park by walking a total of 1.4 km. However, swimming in the Blue Pool is prohibited due to its proximity to the main source, its high temperature, and the swampy conditions.

The Emerald Pool is located 70 km from Ao Nang Beach and 57 km from Krabi Town. It’s open from 08:00 to 17:00. The entrance fee is 200 THB for adults and 100 THB for children.

The best time to visit is during weekdays and in the morning. Otherwise, it can become crowded with daily tours and local school children in the afternoon.

CLIMB DRAGON CREST

In the north of Krabi, within the Khao Ngon Nak National Park, there’s a 3.7 km trail that offers a beautiful route. In fact, in our opinion, it’s one of the most stunning viewpoints in Krabi by far. Reaching the summit will take about 1.5 hours. If you’re planning to rent a motorcycle and go on your own, you’ll need to cover a distance of 18 km from Ao Nang Beach.

When entering your destination on the map, make sure to write “Checkpoint Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park.” Once you arrive, you’ll see the entrance. After parking your motorcycle, you can follow the signs and start following the trail. The entrance fee is 200 THB.

Even though the trail itself isn’t extremely challenging, it’s important to have proper walking shoes on. There are certain areas where progress without the assistance of ropes isn’t possible.

If you feel like you might not be able to do it alone, you can consider purchasing a guided tour to get there.

Also, taking a note might be beneficial. If you’re coming here to climb that specific rock you’ve seen, we would like to mention that for safety reasons, climbing on that rock is now prohibited.

RAILAY BEACH

Right next to Ao Nang, Railay is a renowned area with beautiful beaches and famous rock climbing spots. Since there’s no direct land access, you’ll need to arrive by boat. During our 2023 trip to Thailand, it became one of our favorite places. You can find more detailed information in our Railay Beach Guide.

KRABI NIGHT MARKET

The Night Market, open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Fridays to Sundays, boasts over 70 stalls and is among the top places to savor street food. It’s located about 16 km away from Ao Nang on Sundays.

HOW TO GET KRABI

By Flight:

Depending on where you’re coming from, the fastest way to reach Krabi is by taking a flight. For instance, if you’re coming from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Koh Samui, using a plane is the quickest and most practical option.

The flight duration from Chiang Mai to Krabi is 1 hour and 55 minutes. The airlines that provide direct flights are Bangkok Airways and AirAsia.

The flight duration from Bangkok to Krabi is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Airlines that offer direct flights include AirAsia, The Lion Air, Thai Airways, and VietJet Airways.

The flight duration from Koh Samui to Krabi is 55 minutes, and the only airline that offers direct flights is Bangkok Airways.

There are no direct flights from Surat Thani and Phuket to Krabi.

By Land:

If you’re traveling from Phuket to Krabi, the distance is 120 km. You can safely purchase your bus ticket from the 12Go.Asia website. The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours. By searching for buses from Phuket to Krabi on the website, you can find information about bus schedules, journey duration, and prices.

If you’re planning to come from Koh Samui and want to save on airfare, you can choose the road route. You can take a ferry from Koh Samui to Surat Thani, and from there, take a bus to Krabi, which takes about 3 hours. Alternatively, you can opt for a combined boat+bus ticket from the 12Go.Asia website to avoid the hassle of buying separate tickets.

According to official records, the builder and purpose behind Borobudur are not definitively known. Based on available information, it is believed that the construction year was around 750 AD during the Sailendra dynasty’s period. The construction is estimated to have taken around 75 years and was completed during the reign of King Samaratungga in around 825 AD.

The structure, abandoned and even forgotten by the local population, remained hidden under volcanic ash for centuries until it was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Stamford Raffles. The initial restoration efforts were initiated by the Dutch, followed by an 11-year restoration process supported by UNESCO (with 25 million dollars), ultimately reclaiming it for humanity. In 1991, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Around 2 million blocks of rock, each weighing 40 kilograms, were individually numbered and meticulously placed during the restoration process. Within these 2 million stone blocks, there are 504 Buddha statues, 2,760 relief panels, and 72 stupas around the main dome. When viewed from above, the structure’s mandala shape becomes very apparent.

Inside the temple, you will notice that many of the Buddha statues are missing their heads. Most of these have either been damaged due to earthquakes or stolen.

All the statues you will see inside the temple are original. All the Buddha statues have elongated ears and are in a cross-legged (sukhasana) position. According to Chinese beliefs, long ears signify a long life. In some countries, we encounter the Big Buddha, a plump and smiling Buddha. However, all the statues here depict meditating Buddhas.

Local people have made their homes from the walls of the temple. Despite the original wall color being black, yellow stones were used for restoration, making it quite clear where the restoration has taken place.

The structure doesn’t have any rooms; it consists of 9 main sections and 3 levels, forming an open central space. If you plan to explore each level, keep in mind that you’ll be walking a total of 5 km.

On thousands of panels, scenes from Siddhartha Gautama Buddha’s life, fables, Hindu rituals (for example, reliefs depicting people with flowers, fire, and water in front of stupas), and most importantly, a different message and teachings related to Buddha’s life are portrayed. What you take away from each relief depends on your perspective and understanding. However, if you pay attention, you’ll notice that the reliefs found on the lower levels are missing on the top level. This is because the top level is considered the place of reaching nirvana. Many artists requested to continue the reliefs, but their requests were denied due to the uniqueness of each facial expression and the uncertainty about how to proceed.

The depiction of elephant figures in the reliefs raises questions, as there are no elephants in the Java region. It’s intriguing why these figures were included.

Inside the temple, there are a total of two inscriptions in Sanskrit. One of them is located on the corner to the right when you face the lion statue at the entrance of the temple.

Note: You can dress as you like before visiting the temple. Wearing shorts or sleeveless attire won’t require you to be given a sarong to cover up.

Entrance Fee: Entrance fee of 355,000 IDR is required. The student fee is 210,000 IDR. If you have a student card, be sure to bring it with you.

Prambanan is the most beautiful temple in the world

Inside the complex, there are 3 Trimurti temples, 3 Vahana temples (Nandi, Garuda, Hamsa), 2 Apit temples, 4 Kelir temples, 4 Patol temples, and 224 Pervara temples. And not to mention the reliefs on the temples.

According to historical records, the Hindu prince Rakai Pikatan of the Sanjaya dynasty built Prambanan Temple around the 9th century, 50 years after the construction of Borobudur. The temple complex originally consisted of more than 250 large and small temples. In the 10th century, much of the temple was abandoned as the Mataram Dynasty moved to the eastern part of Java.

By the 16th century, after experiencing earthquakes and subsequent looting, the temple was left to its fate. The restoration of the ruined structure began in 1937. While exploring the temple, you can still observe piles of rocks in the surroundings, some of which have not been restored.

The local people refer to the Prambanan Temple as Rara Jonggrang. As for the story: Prince Bandung Bondowoso falls deeply in love with Princess Rara Jonggrang, the daughter of King Boko. However, in order to marry the princess, Prince must battle King Boko. When Prince defeats King Boko, the princess refuses to marry him due to her father’s death. Instead, she sets an impossible condition, thinking he will not be able to fulfill it, to put an end to the matter. The condition is to build 1000 temples overnight ☺ If he completes this task, she says she will marry him.

Prince manages to build 999 of the temples, and as he is about to start the last one, the princess instructs the villagers to create the illusion of a sunrise by lighting fires. Just as he is about to enter the last temple, Prince sees the illusion of sunrise and is devastated by sorrow. However, upon learning that it was a trick, he becomes furious. The legend, passed from mouth to mouth, tells that because of the princess’s behavior, the gods turned her into stone, and the last temple became cursed. This temple is none other than Prambanan. Similar to Borobudur, it was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

Situated in the south of Java island, Bromo is an active volcano, standing at an altitude of 2,329 meters within the boundaries of the 413,374-hectare Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

MOUNT BROMO

To reach Bromo, your starting point should be either the cities of Malang or Probolinggo. Many travelers come from the city of Probolinggo. Another alternative is to stay at one of the homestays in the village of Cemoro Lawang, the original name of Bromo village, for a more comfortable way to access the area.

If you’re planning to hike up Mount Bromo from Probolinggo, you need to leave your hotel no later than 03:00 in the morning. You can purchase Bromo tours from agencies in Probolinggo or from your hotel. After starting your journey with jeeps, you’ll enter the Bromo area. The first stop of the tours is at Mount Penanjakan, located at an altitude of 2,774 meters, where you can watch the sunrise. It’s also known as King Kong Hill.

From this point, when you look towards Bromo, you’ll see a tall mountain behind it. The highest mountain within the park is Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru. With a total elevation of 3,676 meters, it not only adds beauty to the sunrise over Bromo but is also a popular trekking destination for enthusiasts. If you’re into trekking, we recommend considering a hike up Mount Semeru in addition to experiencing Bromo.

After watching the sunrise, jeeps will take you down to the base of Bromo, which is a desert-like area covered with volcanic ash and sand. Once you arrive here, you’ll need to walk around 1 km to reach the steps of Bromo. If you prefer not to walk, you have the option to use rented horses, which can take you up to the stairs leading to the summit of Bromo.

After reaching the stairs, you can climb 240 steps to reach the summit of Bromo. Upon reaching the highest point, you’ll be able to walk on a one-meter-wide area around the mouth of the volcano and see inside. In fact, as you walk here, you’ll witness the sound coming from the volcano. The sound emerging from beneath the ground can send shivers down your spine. At times, due to the increasing intensity of the volcanic sounds, people standing next to each other might not even hear each other speaking.

Let’s return to Mount Bromo once again. Since the 1800s, Bromo has continued to emit smoke, with numerous eruptions recorded. The most recent significant eruption was in 2010 when plumes of smoke rose 700 meters high. There’s no guarantee whether there will be an eruption or not during your visit 🙂 Bromo serves as a point of understanding the immense power of nature.

How Many Days Enough For Mount Bromo

If your list of places to visit in Indonesia is extensive and time is limited, you should allocate 1.5 to 2 days from your arrival to departure for Mount Bromo. Taking a bus from Probolinggo city to Bromo village and then using jeeps to reach Bromo is the easiest way. This option is recommended for those who want to save time. However, if you decide to trek from Bromo village, it takes about 3 hours. Just be aware of that.

But if you’ve come here for trekking, it’s a good idea to dedicate at least 4 days. This is because there are numerous trekking points within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Here are the things you need to take with you when climbing Mount Bromo:

Since Bromo is at a higher altitude, the weather can be cold in the early morning. Be sure to have a down jacket, scarf, and gloves with you. Also, don’t forget to wear long pants. As the weather warms up after sunrise, it’s important to have lightweight layers underneath. You can take off your jacket if you start to sweat. And definitely wear comfortable sneakers or sports shoes.

Be sure not to forget your tripod and camera. If you have a drone, make sure to capture shots from the top of Bromo.

When you reach Bromo, you’ll strongly sense the sulfur. While some people are unaffected, it can affect others significantly. Therefore, we recommend wearing a mask. In fact, Orkun had lost consciousness at the Ijen Crater due to this issue. You can read our article about the Ijen Crater. The most crucial moment to wear a mask is when you’re in the sandy desert area. If there’s wind, the sands will be blowing everywhere. Don’t forget to have a mask or something like a scarf to protect your face and mouth.

Lastly, remember to pack water and snacks in your bag.

Where Is Mount Bromo and How To Get There

To get to Bromo, you need to fly to either Malang or Surabaya. After arriving in either of these cities, you can take a train or a bus to Probolinggo.

The train journey from Surabaya to Probolinggo takes about 2 hours. The ticket prices vary, with the lowest class around 27,000 IDR and the higher classes around 200,000 IDR. If the train schedule doesn’t suit you, you can also opt for a bus.

If you’re taking the train from Malang to Probolinggo, the journey takes about 3 hours, and the fare is approximately 58,000 IDR.

If you’re traveling by train from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo, the journey takes around 9 hours. Train fares vary between 5-21 USD. You can check train ticket prices and schedules on the Ticket page or purchase tickets from there. Alternatively, you can buy your tickets here.

After arriving in Probolinggo, it’s about 50 km to reach the closest village to Bromo, which is Cemorolawang. If you’re not planning to stay in Probolinggo, we recommend staying in Cemorolawang. Best Time To Visit Yogyakarta

We’d like to emphasize that the tourist city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia’s Java region experiences two distinct seasons. Visiting tropical countries often entails the unpredictability of getting caught in tropical monsoon rains at any moment, making it crucial for visitors to consider which seasons have less rainfall before traveling to such destinations.

When we say two seasons, it means these seasons refer to the dry and wet periods. The wet season, characterized by heavy rainfall, occurs between October and March. Within this period, it’s important to remember that December to February receives the highest amount of rainfall. So, if possible, avoid passing through or near Yogyakarta during December to February!

The period from June to October is the best time to visit the city as it experiences lower rainfall.

Due to its proximity to the equator, Yogyakarta maintains an average temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

How To Get Yogyakarta

If you prefer to travel by plane to the city, you should be aware that you will land at Adisucipto International Airport. The airport is located 8 km east of the city. Flights are frequently available from Bali, Jakarta, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

For international flights, there are flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore (three times a week).

As for intercity transportation, the cheaper option is the bus. The main bus terminal is Giwangan. The terminal is situated 4 km southeast of the city. You can easily find buses to Jakarta, Surabaya, and Badung.

Transportation Within The City

The cheapest way to explore the city is undoubtedly by walking. Besides that, other options are up to your preference. Here’s what we recommend:

We mentioned that walking is the cheapest option. The only thing you need is an English map. You can obtain a map from the airport, train station, or the tourist information right next to Hotel Mutiara on JI. Malioboro Street.

The second option for getting around is by taxi. The taxi meter starting fare in the city is 5,500 IDR, and the night rate starts at 10,000 IDR.

The third option is using “becak,” which are bicycle rickshaws, and “andong,” which are horse-drawn carriages.

The last option, renting a scooter or a vehicle, is the best way to explore the city. We paid a daily fee of 100,000 IDR for it. Since we didn’t rent within the city, we probably overpaid ☹ We are aware that this fee might be considered expensive for Southeast Asia, but we didn’t have any other choice. Normally daily rental prices are between 65K to 90K IDR.

BOROBUDUR BUDDIST TEMPLE

It is the world’s largest and single-piece Buddhist temple. Do not compare it with Cambodia’s Angkor because that is not a temple but a complex. Located 40 km northwest of the city of Yogyakarta, the temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

According to official records, it is not known who built Borobudur and for what purpose. Based on available information, it is known that the construction year is around 750 AD, during the period of the Sailendra dynasty’s development. The construction is estimated to have taken about 75 years and was completed during the rule of Samaratungga around 825 AD.

The structure, abandoned and even forgotten by the people, remained hidden under volcanic ash for centuries. It was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Stamford Raffles. The initial restoration efforts were initiated by the Dutch, and later with the support of UNESCO (25 million dollars), the restoration continued for 11 years, reclaiming it for humanity. In 1991, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Two million blocks of stone, each weighing 40 kilograms, were individually numbered and meticulously placed during the restoration process. Within these 2 million stone blocks, there are 504 Buddha statues, 2,760 reliefs, and 72 stupas around the main dome. When viewed from above, the structure’s mandala shape becomes quite apparent.

Note: Before visiting the site, you can dress as you please. You won’t be given a sarong to cover up just because you’re wearing shorts or sleeveless clothes.

Entrance Fee: Entrance fee of 355,000 IDR is required. The student fee is 210,000 IDR. If you have a student card, be sure to bring it with you.

KALIBIRU NATIONAL PARK

Kalibiru, which has gained popularity on social media in the last two years, is truly a paradise for those seeking an escape within nature.

Previously, due to wildfires and illegal stays, the area of Kalibiru was dry and neglected. However, within five years, thanks to the efforts of the Mandiri Farmer Group, it underwent significant restoration and turned green and natural. The management of this extensive area was handed over to the local community for a duration of 35 years.

The increasing popularity of Kalibiru National Park on Instagram isn’t solely about taking photos. Yes, photography is one of the main activities and a must-do. Sometimes, you might even wait for hours for your turn to take pictures. We waited for about an hour ourselves.

There are numerous spots where you can take photos. You can pick any spot that catches your eye, take your photo there, and then start exploring the surroundings.

KEDUNG PEDUT WATERFALL

Just 15 km away from Kalibiru National Park lies a hidden gem. Since most visitors come primarily for Kalibiru, you can enjoy a peaceful and quiet time at the waterfall, either on your own or with a few people, undisturbed by crowds.

SAMIGULAH TEA PLANTATION – KEBUN THE NGLINGGO

You can explore tea plantations that resemble the beauty of rice terraces in Ubud. They are located not far from Kalibiru National Park, around 37 km away.

MENOREH HILL – MENOREH VIEW

From Kalibiru National Park, you can head 53 km north to a hilltop and experience an unforgettable sunrise early in the morning.

As for outdoor activities, the park not only offers natural beauty but also provides enjoyable experiences for outdoor enthusiasts. These include adrenaline bridges, climbing, and zip-lining, just to name a few. We recommend visiting during 06:00-10:00 for sunrise and 15:00-18:00 for sunset to make the most of your experience.

How To Get There:

The National Park in the Kulon Progo region to the west of Yogyakarta is about 1.5 hours away from the city and 1 hour from the Borobudur Temple.

Upon reaching the National Park, you can park your motorcycle in the designated areas and then embark on a short but steep climb to reach the ticket counter.

GROJOGAN WATU PURBO

Grojogan Watu Puro, the most popular waterfall in recent years, is a magnificent 6-tiered waterfall. It’s often referred to as the “Niagara Falls of Yogyakarta.” However, Grojogan Watu Puro is not a natural waterfall. It was formed in 1975 as a result of the eruption of Mount Merapi, which created a dam. Swimming isn’t advisable at this waterfall. The main reason to visit here is to witness the view of Mount Merapi behind the waterfall. For this, you should definitely choose to visit during sunset.

Since there is no public transportation, the only way to reach this waterfall is by private vehicle or by renting a motorcycle. There is no entrance fee for the waterfall, but you will need to pay a small fee for parking.

MERAPI VOLCANO

Known as the “Fire Mountain,” Mount Merapi is an active volcano located in the Java region of Indonesia, standing at a height of 2,913 meters. This volcano has been erupting lava consistently since 1548, and its smoke can be seen on about 300 days of the year.

One of the most significant activities that should be experienced in Yogyakarta is climbing Mount Merapi and watching the sunrise. The ascent begins at 01:00 at night, and after 5 hours, you’ll be greeted with a magnificent sunrise above the clouds.

Being part of a tour is necessary for this, and the route to follow after this stage includes: Sela – Selakopongiser – Selakopoduwur – Pasar Bubrah (2600 meters) – Puncak Merapi (2913 meters).

THE SULTAN’S PALACE – KRATON

The grand complex, known as “Kraton” or “Karaton,” meticulously reflects the intricate Javanese court system. The extraordinary traditional Javanese architectural examples you’ll see within the complex are unparalleled. The construction of the palace was completed in the year 1790.

The front courtyard of the palace (the northern square) is referred to as “Alun Alun Utara,” while the rear facade (the southern square) is called “Alun Alun Selatan.”

Today, Kraton Yogyakarta is a part of the tradition. Besides being the living area for the Sultan, it continues to serve as a complex for ceremonies and cultural performances.

TAMAN SARI – WATER CASTLE

Located in the old part of the city and to the west of the Keraton (palace), Taman Sari was constructed in the mid-18th century. As a part of the Yogyakarta Palace complex, Taman Sari is one of the places worthy of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When you look at its architecture and reliefs, it’s evident that the complex blends Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, Chinese, and European elements. Spread over a 10-hectare area, the Water Palace features pools, hanging bridges, artificial lakes, and underground tunnels. Out of the 58 structures within the complex, 22 are still noticeable today.

Within the palace, there are three pools. One is for the Sultan’s daughters and sisters, another for his 35 concubines, and the third, which is special, is for himself and his wife.

Upon entering, guides approach you. If you wish to explore in more detail, you can arrange for their assistance. This way, you can gain in-depth knowledge about the history and intricacies of the structure. If history isn’t very important to you and you’re just looking to wander around and take a few photos, you might not need a guide. However, when visiting this city, don’t leave without seeing Taman Sari, which has become a cultural icon of Yogyakarta.

Underground Mosque

The main complexes that should be visited are the Umbul Binangun complex with its pools and the Pulo Kenongo complex with its underground mosque.

MALIOBORO STREET

Every city has its essential bustling, tourist-filled street, right? Well, Yogyakarta’s busiest street is Malioboro. It’s a place where guest houses, restaurants, and shops come together, and it’s the most crowded spot with both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. We can’t say we were particularly fond of this area. That’s why, instead of spending our time wandering around here, we prioritized visiting other places worth seeing.

AFFANDI MUSEUM

The most renowned artist of Indonesia, Affandi, lived and practiced his art in the house where he resided until his death in 1990. Located 6 km to the east of the city center, the museum showcases artworks by Affandi and his daughter Kartika. After Affandi passed away, he was buried in the backyard of the house where he had lived.

PRAMBANAN TEMPLE

After the world’s largest Buddhist temple, it’s time for the world’s most beautiful, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple. This is the largest temple complex in the Java region. There are three main temples, each dedicated to the Hindu deities Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. According to Hindu belief, this temple complex is adorned with symbols of the three deities (Trimurti).

Within the complex, there are 3 Trimurti temples, 3 Vahana temples (Nandi, Garuda, Hamsa), 2 Apit temples, 4 Kelir temples, 4 Patol temples, and 224 Pervara temples. And not to forget the reliefs on the temples as well.

According to historical records, this temple complex was built by the Hindu prince Rakai Pikatan of the Sanjaya dynasty, 50 years after the construction of Borobudur in the 9th century AD. Originally, the complex was composed of over 250 large and small temples. In the 10th century, most of the temple complex was abandoned when the Mataram Dynasty moved to the eastern part of Java.

By the 16th century, after experiencing earthquakes and being looted, the fate of the complex was left in ruins. The restoration process began in 1937. While exploring the temple, you can still see piles of rocks and the fact that they haven’t been restored yet.

RATU BOKO TEMPLE

The temple where Buddhist and Hindu architecture blend, located 3 km east of the Prambanan temple, is one of the essential spots for sunrise. It stands out from the other temples in Yogyakarta with its exotic atmosphere. Being built on a hill, you can also see the Prambanan temple from this location.

Built on a 16-hectare area, the temple was initially used as a residence for the Boko Kingdom of the Mataram Dynasty. Mantras and a Bodhisattva statue were discovered here in the year 792 AD. Among the Hindu remnants, lingga and Ganesha statues are also found within this temple complex.

If you purchase a combined ticket for Prambanan and Ratu Boko, you can use the shuttles within the complex to reach Ratu Boko. Make sure to inquire about this at the ticket counter.

Transportation: Located 19 km east of Yogyakarta in the Piyungan region, within the boundaries of Dawung and Sambirejo villages.

LUWENG SAMPANG WATERFALL

It’s a stunning waterfall with canyons. It’s similar to the Kawasan Falls in the Philippines but much smaller. It’s a remarkable place for nature enthusiasts as well as photographers.

AIR TERJUN SRI GETHUK

Since there is no public transportation to this waterfall, the best solution is to rent a motorbike and go there. You can find the location using apps like Map.Me and Google Maps. If you have trouble finding the waterfall, you can ask the locals for directions. The entrance fee to the waterfall is 25,000 IDR.

GOA JOMBLANG – JOMBLANG CAVE

This cave, with its immense size and meters-high ceilings, offers mesmerizing light displays that will make you question your eyes. The effect of the rays filtering in from the open area on top is the precursor to its magnificent atmosphere. Calling it just a cave would be inaccurate; it’s actually part of a cave system.

The cave has been formed over years through the erosion of karst rocks by rainwater and underground rivers. You could say it’s somewhat similar to the Yucatan cave in Mexico.

The cave has three sections: the first section is the area with the hole on top, the second one is the part with the long tunnel, and the last one is the main cavern area.

We recommend being here very early in the morning. Since only 25 people are allowed each day, and the hours when direct sunlight enters the cave are between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, you should aim to arrive by 10:00 AM at the latest. It takes about 1.5 hours by car or motorbike from Yogyakarta.

The last 200 meters of the road before reaching the cave are quite rough. However, you’ll have suitable shoes for the cave entrance ☺ If you don’t want to clean the mud from your shoes and socks after exiting the cave, you can carry slippers to wear inside the cave. Once you reach the entrance point, you’ll need to descend about 50 meters while attached to ropes. After the rope part, it’s all about your footing. There are no difficult or tiring stages, as the entrance is quite easy and enjoyable.
